Before there was Alter Bridge, there was Creed.
Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips, and Brian Marshall –
behind frontman Scott Stapp – sold more than 30
million albums and played to worldwide audiences as
the hugely popular band, Creed. But, all good things
must end, and after more than a decade together, Creed
disbanded in the summer of 2004. Scott Stapp went on
to forge his own solo career while Tremonti, Phillips,
and Marshall came together to form Alter Bridge, taking
their name from a bridge in Tremonti’s hometown
of Detroit. Joining them as their new frontman was singer
Myles Kennedy.
Kennedy brought his own success to Alter Bridge, as
he’d played a key role in the band Mayfield Four.
(When Kennedy joined the trio, Alter Bridge sealed their
bond of friendship by bungee jumping.)
Make no mistake about it. Alter Bridge is not –
nor is it meant to be – a reincarnation of Creed,
although the band aims for the same type of success.
The band’s sound is a mix of good, old-fashioned
rock and roll and hard rock, appealing to Creed’s
fans and new fans alike. Alter Bridge released their
debut album, “One Day Remains,” in 2004,
which featured the popular single “Open Your Eyes.”
Alter Bridge is quietly making their mark on the music
scene. In fact, their song “Metalingus”
is often heard at WWE events. Major league baseball
fans also got a taste of Alter Bridge’s sound
during 2005’s All-Star festivities in Detroit.
During the homerun hitting contest, one of the highlights
of All-Star week, “Open Your Eyes” was played.
Before long, Alter Bridge concert tickets were selling
out at every venue they played.
Most recently, Alter Bridge severed ties with their
label, Wind-Up, taking their careers in their own hands.
Additionally, the band now owns the rights to most of
their own music, which allows them more flexibility
to do what they want with their songs.
