American
Idol |
| The hit American
TV show, American Idol, is actually based on the British original
Pop Idol. The show hit America in 2000 and quickly became
of favorite of both young and old as viewers get the chance
to vote for their favorite pop artist and their chance for
a million dollar recording contract. In the initial stages
of the competition, contestants from all over the country
audition for a chance to be in the next round, held in Hollywood,
CA. The three main judges during this phase are Simon Cowell,
Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, all of which have had lucrative
careers in the music industry. The judges choose who moves
on to the next round and the show then goes to Hollywood.
In order to be eligible, contestants must be between the ages
of 16 to 28, citizens of the US and are not permitted to be
in any form of a recording or talent management agreement.
Contestants are also subject to background checks for any
arrest records or drug/alcohol abuse.
Once in Hollywood, contestants feel they are living out
their dreams and the public gets to witness a majority of
them be crushed because only 24 move on to the final round.
Once in the final round, the judging is then handed over
to the American public and they can place their vote 2 hours
after each show via phone or text message. Contestants perform
weekly and get voted off weekly until only one remains.
The winner then gets to see the fulfillment of their dreams
when they are rewarded a one million dollar recording and
promotion contract.
One of the most amazing things about American Idol is how
successful the winners, and even second or third place contestants,
do in the music industry after the show is over. American
Idol so far has produced two platinum recording artists
in Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson and many gold recording
artists as well.
After
the show is over, the top ten finalists go on tour across
the US. Because of the popularity of the show, American
Idol tickets sell out immediately at every venue scheduled.
Fans love to see their favorite singer live after so many
weeks of voting and hoping for their favorite to come through
to the end. Even if they don’t make it to the number
one spot, a top ten American Idol finalist still has a very
good chance at a successful career. No one is sure how long
the American Idol phenomenon will last but for all the young
hopefuls out there, everyone is hoping the show will continue
for some time.
