Manilow has been referred to by Rolling Stone Magazine as
“The Showman of our Generation,” and to his many
fans across the globe that is exactly what he is. His career
spans almost every area of entertainment; he is a singer and
songwriter and he has also worked in television, film and
the live stage. His record sales throughout his career top
58 million worldwide and he has written hundreds of songs,
performed live for millions and picked up a Grammy, an Emmy,
Tony Awards and an Oscar nomination.
Barry Manilow was born in Brooklyn, New
York where he gained a love for music at the early age of
seven. He played the accordion and the piano and eventually
ended up at Julliard and the New York College of Music.
His biggest break came in 1972, when he met Bette Midler
and became her music director. He co-produced her first
album, The Divine Miss M, and helped her with her second
platinum album. After helping her with her success, Barry
signed with Arista Records to make his solo debut, but Bette
persuaded him to tour with her and he opened for her concerts.
The crowds loved him and from then on Barry Manilow was
set up for success with the public eye.
Since then he has made more than 30 albums
and has had 38 top 40 hits throughout his career. In addition
to his own commercial success, Barry Manilow’s talent
extends to the albums he has produced for Bette Midler,
Nancy Wilson and Dionne Warwick. His own hits include; “I
Write the Songs,” “Can’t Smile Without
You,” and “Mandy.” Radio and Records Magazine
named Barry Manilow the number one Adult Contemporary Artist
of all time.
