| At age
78, BB King is still playing the blues to sold-out concert
halls across the world. Born Riley B. King on September 16,
1925, King grew up around rhythm and blues music and began
playing at a very young age. He started recording in the 1940’s
but really didn’t get his big break until 1948 after
performing on Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio program on
KWEM out in West Memphis. This radio show led to steady engagements
and King was lined up for a successful career playing the
blues.
His name could not be more fitting because
BB King is truly the “King of the Blues.” Over
his 50 year career he has inspired some of rock’s
legends, like Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Jeff Beck.
His hits have become classics and his touring is legendary;
in 1956, BB King and his band played 342 shows in one year
alone.
BB King’s award list is easily one
of the longest by any musician’s standards. He was
inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984,
he made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, also in
’87 he received NARA’s Lifetime Achievement
Grammy Award and he has received numerous honorary doctorates
of music degrees from such institutions as Berklee College
of Music, Yale University, Tougaloo College and Mississippi
Valley State University.
In 1991, BB King decided to branch out even
more by opening his own Blues club in Memphis and the success
of that club led to the opening of clubs in Los Angeles,
New York and two more in Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut.
He has been the subject of several best selling books including
his own autobiography, “Blues All Around Me.”
BB
King continues to tour extensively. From 2001-2003, he was
averaging 250 concerts a year and the public demand for
his live performances is still high. Any time BB King announces
a show, his concert tickets sell-out within minutes, sometimes
forcing him to add on more shows to accommodate the public’s
demand. He has recorded more than 50 albums and many of
them are considered classics. With this resume under his
belt, BB King will hold the title of “King of Blues”
for quite some time.
