Bette Midler
In 1979, Bette Midler starred in The Rose, a film whose main character was based on Janis Joplin. Though Midler had been appearing in Broadway plays (Fiddler On The Roof), was a regular New York City nightclub act (with, of all people, the wonderful Barry Manilow) and had released several albums throughout the '70s, it was this film appearance that set her up for the stardom she enjoys to this day. The film's title track was a top 10 hit, and Midler struck while she hot: She followed up immediately with the concert film Divine Madness and a book A View From A Broad. It was a long way from her first top 10 single, a cover of the Andrews Sisters' "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy."

While it seemed Midler was on the road to superstardom, she fell off with a series of unsuccessful albums and dubious film roles. Her film career picked up in 1986 with Down And Out In Beverly Hills, but musically she was stuck in a bland, professional rut. Then 1989's Beaches hit theaters and with it came Midler's version of "Wind Beneath My Wings," a No. 1 hit and just the thing Milder needed to get back in the ring. Always one to move quickly when the time is right, Midler put out Some People's Lives in 1990 and watched the public memory respond with immediate recall. The single "From A Distance" went to No. 1 and the album went top 10, selling well over a million copies. It just goes to show you can never count Midler out. Her latest album, perhaps an homage to her underground bathhouse days, is Bathhouse Betty.
