The year is 1962, and the only thing, I mean the only thing young Baltimore teenager Tracy Turnblad wants is to make an appearance as a dancer on the popular Corny Collins Show. And even though she should probably wish for a better hairstyle instead, Tracy has her mind made up that she’s going to be on that show, making it her only goal in life. (We didn’t say she was deep, just loveable.) Based on the 1988 film of the same name by John Waters, the original Hairspray movie starred Waters’ favorite actor/actress Divine and a then-unknown young actress named Ricki Lake who, despite an unfortunate later career as a talk show hostess, rocketed to stardom largely on the basis of this role. At its heart, Hairspray is a hilariously funny (if not particularly deep) under dog story. And don’t we all like to root for the under dog? Hairspray the musical became an immediate Broadway hit from its opening night premiere at the Neil Simon Theatre in the summer of 2002, and is still dazzling sold-out ticket audiences.
