Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The
Color Purple comes to life in Oprah Winfrey’s
new musical production of the beloved classic. With
over five million copies sold, and a film version that
garnered 11 Academy Award nominations and the Golden
Globe for Best Picture, the musical version of The Color
Purple is a legend in the making.
The Color Purple tickets take you on a journey through
20 years in the life of a courageous black woman as
she searches for her place in the world. The story of
Celie has made a permanent imprint on American culture,
and her tale of triumph over adversity is an inspiration
to people of any race, class or religious background.
Oprah Winfrey, who originated the role of Sofia in Stephen
Spielberg’s film version, co-produced the musical
version of The Color Purple.
A true celebration of life, The Color Purple features
a thrilling score covering several musical genres, including
ragtime, gospel, jazz and blues. Responsible for this
adventure in American music are Brenda Russel, a celebrated
songwriter who has collaborated with Sting, Diana Ross,
Tina Turner and Mary J. Blige; Allee Willis, with over
50 million records sold, including songs for Earth,
Wind & Fire and The Pointer Sisters, Willis was
nominated for an Emmy for the “Friends”
theme song, “I’ll Be There for You;”
and Stephen Bray, writer and producer of some of Madonna’s
biggest hits, including “Papa Don’t Preach,”
“Express Yourself,” and “Into the
Groove.”
Directed by Gary Griffin, Associate Artistic Director
of Chicago Shakespeare Theater, The Color Purple’s
book was written by Marsha Norman. Norman won the Pulitzer
for her play, ‘night, Mother and the Tony Award
for the book for The Secret Garden.
The Color Purple stars LaChanze as Celie and Kingsley
Leggs as her husband, Mister. LaChanze received Tony
and Drama Desk Award nominations for her performance
in Once on This Island, appeared in Company and Ragtime
on Broadway, and her film credits include Disney’s
Hercules and Leap of Faith. Leggs appeared in Miss Saigon
on Broadway, and received an L.A. Ovation Award for
his work in Dreamgirls and Ragtime.
Also starring Elisabeth Withers-Mendes as Shug Avery,
Felicia P. Fields as Sofia, Darlesia Ceary as Nettie,
Brandon Victor Dixon as Harpo and Krisha Marcano as
Squeak.
