| The legendary
Celine Dion had humble beginnings as the youngest of 14 children,
growing up in the small town of Charlemagne, Quebec. By the
age of 5, Celine Dion was performing live across the town
to anyone who would listen. It wasn’t until 1980, when
her mother brought her to manager and future husband, Rene
Angelil, that Dion’s career began to start. He believed
in her so much that he mortgaged his home and began financing
her career. After releasing her first album (entirely in French)
La Voix du bon Dieu, she became an instant start throughout
Quebec. Her career continued to grow ever since that first
release and in 1991, Celine Dion burst into the international
music scene with the album Unison which spawned the number
four hit on the US charts, “ Where Does My Heart Beat
Now.”
Since the 1991 release of Unison, Celine Dion is one of
only seven female artists with multiple Diamond albums (shipped
over 10 million copies). In the US, she has had five number
1 singles, 13 top 10 singles and 24 top 100 singles. Her
albums have also broken Billboard records with 4 number
one albums and 9 top ten albums; it is not surprising to
learn that she sold more than 75 million copies in the 1990’s.
Celine Dion performed the hit single for the film Titanic,
which was the second best selling CD in the 1990’s
and her albums, Falling Into You and Let’s Talk About
Love are both tied for third position, having sold more
than 30 million copies each.
In 2000, Celine Dion announced that she was going to retire
from the music industry and focus on her husband and family.
She gave birth to a son during that time and returned two
years later to a lucrative contract with Caesar’s
Palace in Las Vegas to perform 5 shows a week. The show
sells out in Las Vegas more than any performer to date and
the contract has now been extended until 2007. The show
is described as a combination of dancing, singing and visual
effects while Celine Dion performs her songs. It was put
together by Franco Dragone, the creator of Cirque O.
With her sellout
Vegas show, her international success and her family support,
Celine Dion is one of the heavy hitters in the music industry.
She continues to surprise fans by maintaining her voice
in live concert and with her show A New Day…Live in
Las Vegas, a more appropriate title could not be chosen
for the dynamic diva.
