| Chicago
is a rock band that is well known for their jazz and horn
ensembles and has been one of America’s biggest hit
producers throughout their 35 year career. The band formed
in 1967 in Chicago, IL when a group of friends from DePaul
University decided to start jamming together at clubs around
campus. Eventually the group grew to seven members and decided
to take their small success in Chicago to Los Angeles in 1968
and sign with Columbia Records. Chicago’s first album,
The Chicago Transit Authority, was a huge hit throughout America
and received heavy airplay on the radio. It included such
hits as, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is,”
“Beginnings,” and “Questions 67 and 68.”
Chicago’s popularity really exploded
with the release of their second album, Chicago, and yielded
top ten hits like “Make Me Smile,” and “Colour
My World.” From that point on, Chicago produced a
double album every year throughout the 70’s, all of
which were titled in numeric order with Roman numerals.
Chicago finally got the attention they worked so hard for
in 1976 with the release of Chicago X and the popular ballad,
“If You Leave Me Now,” which won the band a
Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group.
The second phase of Chicago happened in
1982 when they signed with Warner Brothers and hired a new
producer, David Foster. They came out with Chicago 16 and
topped the charts with “Hard to Say I’m Sorry/Get
Away.” Later that year they released Chicago 17 and
struck gold again with “You’re the Inspiration,”
and “Hard Habit to Break.”
Despite
all their albums and touring, the group is still active
in the new millennium. They continue to tour the US with
Earth, Wind and Fire and Chicago concert tickets sell out
across that nation. Their jazz style has won many loyal
fans over the years and enables the group to continue to
tour in both big and small venues around the world. With
their love of performing and their ability to produce albums
on a consistent basis, Chicago should be around for quite
some time.
