Coldplay is a four man band from London,
UK that in the past five years has managed to take the
alternative music world by storm with their post Britpop
style and melodic lyrics. Compared by some to REM, Oasis
and U2, Coldplay has managed to win two Grammy’s,
fill huge concert halls around the globe and sell millions
of records all since the year 2000.
Coldplay’s debut album, Parachutes, was released
in July of 2000 and their biggest hit, “Yellow”
took the number one spot on both sides of the Atlantic.
The video for “Yellow” is what really sparked
Coldplay’s popularity as MTV aired the video non-stop
for more than 3 months. By Christmas of 2000, Parachutes
had more than 1.6 million in record sales and Coldplay
was headlining their first tour of North America, with
appearances on Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with
David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
Parachutes also earned the band Best Alternative Music
Album honors at the 2002 Grammy Awards. With such a
strong debut album, Coldplay now had the ability to
write their own ticket and they returned to the studios
in October 2001 to begin work on their second album,
A Rush of Blood to the Head.
A Rush of Blood to the Head was released in August
2002 and produced the hit singles, “In My Place,”
“The Scientist,” and “Clocks.”
Then they immediately embarked on a year-long tour that
spanned five continents and included co-headlining festivals
at Glastonbury, V2003 and Rock Werchter. A Rush of Blood
to the Head earned the band two more Grammy’s
in 2003. After the year-long tour, Coldplay took a break
in 2004 to spend time with their families but came back
together in June of 2005 and released X&Y, which
debuted at the #1 spot in 28 countries.
Coldplay has also been very active for several non-profit
organizations such as Amnesty International, Band Aid
20, Live 8 and the Teenage Cancer Trust. The band also
took a political stand in the US against the War in
Iraq and publicly supported presidential candidate John
Kerry in 2004.
Coldplay concert tickets currently sell out immediately
upon release and they continue to tour extensively across
the country and world, filling large concert halls and
keeping their fans wanting more. With their album history
so far, it is easy to predict that whatever Coldplay
releases will debut at number one somewhere in the world.
