Band formed in early 1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia and
no one ever expected the grass roots band to sweep the nation
with its bluesy and world music vibe. Dave Matthews is the
front man for the group, as well as writer and instrumentalist.
Their first official gig was in 1991 at the Earth Day Festival
and the word spread about the Dave Matthews Band all over
college campuses in the area, state and eventually the entire
Northeast region. One of the amazing feats of the Dave Matthews
Band is the way that they built their fan base, with very
little marketing and no big buck recording contract. Their
self recorded and produced album, Remember Two Things, debut
on College charts as the highest independent album and went
on to be certified gold.
In 1994, after word of mouth could be heard across the
nation, the Dave Matthews Band signed with RCA records and
released Under the Table and Dreaming. They then hit the
road for their biggest tour to date, an international sweep
that lasted over a year and took them to London and two
full summers of sold-out tours. With this tour under their
belt, their debut album, with the smash hit “What
Would You Say,” went quadruple platinum in the US,
thus proving that the Dave Matthews Band was here to stay.
Dave Matthews fans are extremely devoted. That can partly
be attributed to the band’s open door policy at live
shows; they allow attendees to video tape their concerts,
which most groups will not due to bootlegging of their performances
on the black market. This phenomenon did happen to the Dave
Matthews Band in 1997 as thousands of bootlegged CD’s
flooded the market. The band’s response was brilliant;
they released a professionally recorded live album, Live
at Red Rocks 8-15-95, without any marketing to keep costs
down for the consumer and the album debuted at number three
on the charts and was instantly certified platinum.
The
Dave Matthews Band concert touring continues to astound
many fans. They are one of the longest touring bands out
there, with tours lasting well over a year and half and
they continue to tour on a yearly basis. Dave Matthews concert
