Breaking from a hugely successful band
and starting a solo career is difficult at best. But,
many have successfully made the transition from a pivotal
member of a superstar band to an accomplished individual
artist. Donald Fagen is just such a musician.
Co-founder of the hugely popular band Steely Dan, Fagen
spent much of the 1970s focusing his energy on writing
and performing songs for the pop-jazz band. Instead
of trying to compete with his former success with Steely
Dan, Fagen simply continued with the sound he’d
made famous. His debut album, “The Nightfly,”
was released in 1982, which earned plenty of critical
acclaim, but afterward Fagen stalled, his creative energy
tapped. The drought continued for years, during which
time he filled his time writing for Premiere Magazine.
Finally, in 1993, he hit the recording studio again,
which resulted in the album, “Kamakiriad.”
Despite the warm reception “Kamakiriad”
received, Fagen’s attention turned back to Steely
Dan as the band reunited for a short period. Steely
Dan released several new albums, among them “Two
Against Nature” in 2000 and “Everything
Must Go” in 2003.
Following the release of “Everything Must Go,”
Fagen again headed into the recording studio to lay
tracks for his third solo album. He started recording
in 2004, which culminated in the 2006 release of “Morph
the Cat,” which received plenty of critical acclaim
and introduced Fagen to a new generation of music fans.
To promote his latest album, Fagen hit the road, crisscrossing
the country and performing in front of longtime fans.
Securing Donald Fagen concert tickets became a challenge,
as fans gobbled them up as soon as the tickets went
on sale.
Whether he’s performing with the world-renowned
band he helped found or on his own, Fagen promises his
fans one thing: great music every time.
