One of the
world’s elite international superstars can be found
in Elton John. A musician since age 4, a record breaker
and setter in the music industry and a crowd stopping live
performer, Elton John still shows no signs of slowing down
after a 40 year career. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on
March 25, 1947 in Middlesex, England, Elton’s first
hit in 1970 with “Your Song” made him an instant
favorite on the pop charts in both England and the US. In
1993, he surpassed the King, Elvis Presley, by having the
most consecutive years of top 40 hits on the Billboard charts;
he is the only artist in history to have reached the top
30 for 24 straight years. During the 70’s he broke
another record by having a number one album for seven consecutive
years, with 16 top 20 hits in row between the years of 1972
to 1975. Blockbuster sales have never been a stranger to
Elton John and even his “minimal” records have
gone gold.
Part of Elton
John’s amazing record can be attributed to his writing
partner, Bernie Taupin. The two together have written some
of rock music’s most memorable songs. “Levon,”
“Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man,” and
“Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” are just a few
of the number one hits the two have pounded out. They are
so in tune with one another that several of their hits they
have written the music and words in less than two hours,
for example; “A Candle in the Wind,” a tribute
to Marilyn Monroe and later rewritten for Princess Diana
was written in less than an hour.
Elton John’s
live performances also live up to his famous hits. He is
one of the only performers in Las Vegas history to have
the most consecutive sold-out shows. Elton John concert
tickets sell out in every nation that he performs in, whether
the US, England, Japan or Brazil, he performs live to packed
stadiums across the world. The list of performers that he
has worked with is no small feat either. Elton John has
collaborated with John Lennon, Little Richard, Don Henley,
George Michael and Bonnie Raitt, to name a few. He also
has an academy award for Best Original Song under his belt
with The Lion King’s “Can You Feel the Love
Tonight.” It is safe to say that with this type of
resume that Elton John is one of the music industry’s
true legends.
