Evanescence

There’s a story behind the creation of every band. And, while some are more interesting – or even more bizarre than others – Evanescence’s story is simple yet poignant. It was the Meat Loaf anthem, “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That),” that originally brought Evanescene’s founders Amy Lee and Ben Moody together.

The scene was a youth camp deep in Arkansas, and Lee was sitting at the piano, playing the popular Meat Loaf song, which immediately grabbed Moody’s attention. A friendship was born, and the duo began writing and performing songs together. But, because there were only two of them, they weren’t able to perform for audiences, instead concentrating their efforts on writing and recording songs, among them their early singles, “Understanding,” and “Give Unto Me.”

Eventually the pair invited several musicians to join the band – David Hodges, John LeCompt, William Boyd, and Rocky Gray rounded out the lineup, and Evanescence was born. The band got their first big break when they were signed with Wind-up Entertainment. Their debut album, “Fallen,” was released in 2003 and catapulted the band to major stardom. In fact, Evanescence undoubtedly surpassed any and all expectations they may have had for the album as “Fallen” went platinum six times, sold more than 14 million copies, and enjoyed a stunning 43 weeks in the Top Ten of the Billboard Charts. Included on “Fallen” were the hit singles “Bring Me To Life,” “Going Under,” “Everybody’s Fool,” and “My Immortal.”

By the end of 2003, Evanescence on fire, and Evanescence concert tickets were white hot. As their popularity sizzled, Evanescence faced some controversy, most notably dealing with the Christian rock label some critics had given them. None of the band members considered themselves a Christian rock band and quickly wanted to quash such suggestions.

“Fallen” also proved to be the last album that included original band member Moody, who departed from the band shortly after the album’s release, and was replaced by Terry Balsamo.

Despite the turmoil, Evanescence managed to release another album/DVD combo, “Anywhere But Home,” in 2004 which featured the band performing live in Paris.

Evanescene’s next album, “The Open Door,” is slated for release in late autumn of 2006.
