| Jimmy Buffett’s
career has been as colorful as the Western Caribbean clothes
that he so famously wears. He started singing in a Miami coffee
house in 1972 and has not stop performing live since. Jimmy
Buffett has one of the largest loyal fan bases in popular
music which makes him a cultural icon it the eyes of his “parrot
heads” (the term coined from the colorful hats his fans
wear to concerts.) Buffett’s music has been described
as tropical, wistful boozy tunes about sailors and dreamers
with such hits as “Margaritaville,” “Weather
is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful,” and “Cheeseburger
in Paradise.”
Born in Pascagoula, Mississippi in 1946, Jimmy Buffett
started his career attempting to be a country music star
and spent a large part of the early 60’s in Nashville.
County just wasn’t his niche; he decided to try Miami
and Key West which started him in the right direction. More
then twenty albums later and a career spanning over 30 years,
it is safe to say that Jimmy Buffett found his groove in
the music industry. His boxed set album released in 1992,
Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads, is MCA’s biggest
selling box set ever. He has hit number one on the music
charts a few times, but his biggest hit to date is with
Alan Jackson, the country bar ballad “It’s Five
O’Clock Somewhere.” Not only is Buffett a successful
musician, but he also owns restaurants in Florida and New
Orleans, has two New York Times best selling books under
his belt and he is an avid pilot.
With
more than 2 dozen albums released over the past 25 years,
Jimmy Buffett fans have a lot of music to choose from but
perhaps the most amazing accomplishment is how quickly Jimmy
Buffett concert tickets sell out. During the 1980’s,
Buffett made more money from his concert tours than he did
off of his record sales and he is still known to this day
as one of the nations’ biggest concert draws. Buffett’s
summer tours have become an annual tradition in the southern
states, with concert tickets selling out within minutes.
Jimmy Buffett state his success in the perfect way with
the following quote, “I thought everybody would start
going to somebody else’s shows. But it hasn’t
happened!”
