The Australian born Keith Urban knew
from the very young age of 6 that he wanted to play country
music for the rest of his life. Raised by a father that
loved American culture and especially country music, Keith
Urban quickly followed in those footsteps as a young guitar
student. By the time he was 8 years old, Urban was winning
local talent shows in Australia for singing and dancing,
all of which built the foundation for his amazing live
performances that he gives today. In Australia, Keith
self-produced his solo album and had three number one
hit singles on the Australian charts. But the young singer/songwriter
knew he needed to go to Nashville to really be able to
play the music he loved.
In the late 80’s, a bright-eyed Urban showed
up in Nashville and quickly began performing his ballads
in the club circuit with fellow band members, Jerry
Flowers and Peter Clarke. Their live shows eventually
caught the eye of a major label, Capitol Nashville,
and their debut album, The Ranch, was released to critical
acclaim in 1997. Things still didn’t take off
after Keith Urban’s debut album; he continued
to play locally in support of the record. It wasn’t
until 1999’s release of his self-titled solo album
that things really started to take off. His got signed
on to tour with Dwight Yoakam, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.
By the end of this tour, Keith Urban had enough support
and fans to be his own headliner and his album sales
went through the roof. His hard work paid off with a
top ten single in “Your Everything.”
With a solid fan base made up of young country fans,
Keith Urban’s next album, Golden Road was positioned
for success. The album spend six weeks in the number
one spot and spawned two number one singles, “Somebody
Like You,” and “Who Wouldn’t Want
to be Me.” In 2003, he became country radio’s
most played artist and had an album that spent 100 weeks
in the charts. Keith Urban was ready for another tour,
which is exactly what he did. Keith Urban concert tickets
began to sell out all over the US as his two solo albums
won the hearts of the American country audience. Whether
or not he grew up here made no difference to his growing
fan base and as he continues to dig deep in his own
music, he is also digging deep in the very fabric of
the country music industry. One thing is for certain,
Keith Urban is going to stay in America for now.
