Luis Miguel is a Mexican performer
that has seen more success in the US than any other bilingual
performer in music history. Born Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri,
but referred to as “El Sol” (the sun) in Mexico,
Luis Miguel began his career at the early age of eleven.
He was raised by very supportive parents both active in
the entertainment industry, his father was a famous guitarist
and his mother was an actress, he was discovered at a
birthday party while performing and given a recording
contract on the spot. Due to his stellar good looks, Luis
Miguel quickly became a teen idol in the Latin music scene.
His album released in 1991, Romance, was the first
platinum Spanish language album in the United States
and has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
In 1994, he released Segundo Romance and it repeated
the same history becoming platinum shortly after its
release. Luis Miguel modeled himself after singers like
Julio Iglesias and Frank Sinatra and in 1994, after
his multi-platinum album, he was asked to sing with
Sinatra on “Come Fly With Me,” on Sinatra’s
all-star collection, Duets II. Luis Miguel also starred
in some films and sang for the soundtrack of Walt Disney’s
Hunchback of Notre Dame and in 1996, at the age of 26,
Luis Miguel received a star in the Hollywood Walk of
Fame.
Since the start of his career, Luis Miguel has sold
more than 55 million records worldwide, received 4 Grammy
Awards and 3 World Music Awards, and Luis Miguel concert
tickets have sold out at some of the largest venues
in the world. He currently holds the record for having
25 consecutive sold-out shows at the National Auditorium
in Mexico. Over 260,000 fans in that city have attended
his shows. His international superstar status will definitely
last throughout his lifetime and his fans show up in
droves to attend his live shows. Luis Miguel is a staple
in the Latin music scene and will be so for quite some
time.
