| Ozzfest
started in 1996 and has been a summer tradition in the heavy
metal rock scene ever since. Started by Ozzy Osborne and his
wife, Sharon, Ozzfest has become the launching pad for some
of today’s most successful rock bands. Ozzfest tours
the entire United States and stops at all the major cities.
In 2002, the tour did finally cross overseas by performing
at Donington Park in the UK. Traditionally, Ozzfest is held
at large, outdoor venues due to the amount of people that
buy Ozzfest tickets. In 2005, Ozzfest performed live in more
places than ever before, proving that this summer concert
series has a stronghold in the modern heavy metal world.
Either Ozzy Osborne or his band, Black Sabbath,
headlines every Ozzfest tour. The concert is an all day
affair composed of two stages. The first stage usually supports
all of the bigger bands or the headlining artists and the
second stage has the newer groups, with additional local
bands rotating in. Ozzfest has helped boost the careers
of some of hard rock’s heavy hitters like; Tool, Megadeth,
System of a Down, Incubus, Godsmack, Linkin Park and Korn.
After performing on the main stage at Ozzfest, these bands
generally have enough pull to start their own tour and be
fairly successful with it.
Each
summer Ozzfest tickets sell out within minutes and fans
wait in lines overnight for a shot to see all of their favorite
bands in one location. It is fairly safe to assume that
if a band is chosen to perform at Ozzfest, they will definitely
be around the rock scene for quite some time. Many fans
enjoy the variety and of course the longevity of the concert
helps in selling the tour out as well. Ozzy and Sharon Osborne
can definitely be proud of the American tradition they have
started and many smaller bands are probably forever grateful
for a shot at a live, national tour.
