Soulful melodies and metal riffs wouldn’t
seem like a good combination, but Sevendust somehow makes
it work. The Atlanta band rose to stardom in the late
1990s with its unique mix of those two elements.
Sevendust first hit the scene in 1994, going by the
name Crawlspace. The band put out a single, “My
Ruin,” on the Mortal Kombat: More Kombat soundtrack.
The group then began calling itself Sevendust after
a West Coast band laid claim to its original moniker.
The band’s self-titled debut was released in 1997.
The two most well-known tracks from “Sevendust”
are “Black” and “Bitch,” and
the band typically opens its live shows with “Black.”
That first album was a bit slow to take off, but fueled
by an appearance on OzzFest in 1998, it eventually went
gold.
“Home” was released in 1999, and the band
began touring with bands such as Creed, even garnering
a slot at Woodstock ’99. “Home” has
also reached gold status, and Sevendust has picked up
Band of the Year, Album of the Year, and New Band of
the Year awards.
The band has toured with a number of big-name bands,
including Godsmack and Metallica, and it hooked up with
Slipknot, Coal Chamber, and others for 2000’s
“Tattoo the Earth” tour. After returning
from the tour, Sevendust headed for the studio, and
“Animosity” came out in 2001.
The third time was the charm, as “Animosity”
also went gold and gained Sevendust a more secure foothold
with mainstream audiences, boosting sales of Sevendust
concert tickets.
Offsetting Sevendust’s commercial success was
personal tragedy, as the band members lost some friends
and loved ones during the next couple of years. But
in 2003, the band released its fourth album, “Seasons,”
their most popular offering to date.
After four studio albums, Sevendust released a live
album on CD/DVD in 2004. “Southside Double-Wide:
Acoustic Live” includes a cover of Nine Inch Nails’
“Hurt” as a tribute to country star Johnny
Cash, who also recorded the song not long before his
death.
In 2005, Sevendust went back into the studio for “Next,”
and the band also started its own label, 7Bros Records.
A greatest hits package was released late that year.
