The Killers are one of modern rock’s
fresh new bands with an extremely loyal following after
the release of their freshman album, Hot Fuss. Lead singer
Brandon Flowers formed The Killers in late 2002 in Las
Vegas, NV after his former band cruelly left him behind
to try performing in Los Angeles. Brandon Flowers met
fellow band member Dave Keuning through an ad in the paper
and Dave has been quoted as saying, “Brandon was
the only person to reply to my ad who wasn’t a complete
freak.” The duo then met Ronnie Vannucci and Mark
Stoermer, the four officially became The Killers and they
began hashing out their first album in a garage in Las
Vegas.
After playing all over Vegas, The Killers were noticed
by a London-based label (Lizard King) and eventually
they made their way to the UK and began performing “Mr.
Brightside” to enamored European audiences. After
the word spread in the UK, The Killers were picked up
to play at the New York CMJ Music Festival which led
to a contract with worldwide Island Records. From there,
the boys began to hash out Hot Fuss’s 11 tracks,
with lyric content ranging from androgynous girlfriends
and Studio 54 Aids victims to stalkers and songs of
ambition to rise above the every day routine. Island
Records also managed to pull in some top notch mixing
expertise in Alan Moulder (U2, Smashing Pumpkins) and
Mark Needham (Fleetwood Mac) to help put the finishing
touches on the album.
Currently, The Killers concert tickets sell out at
every venue they play in the US and the UK. The success
of Hot Fuss and the excitement over the future release
of their sophomore album have fans waiting in line for
any Killers engagement. If they continue on this track,
The Killers definitely have the potential to be one
of the heavy hitters in modern rock.
