U2 made their first US appearance on The
Tomorrow Show, hosted by Tom Snyder, on June 4, 1981. They
performed live I Will Follow and Twilight, the US accepted
U2 instantly and their album, “Boy,” climbed
the rock billboard charts. Their next album, “October”
exhibited some growing pains but that didn't’t last
long. In 1983, U2 released “War” and then in
1984, they gave the world “The Unforgettable Fire,”
both albums made U2 an 80’s phenomenon with nothing
but sold out tours for the Irish rockers. After touring,
U2 released their highest selling album in 1987, “The
Joshua Tree,” and permanently etched a place for themselves
as one of the biggest rock bands of all time.
They now had the freedom to experiment and
that is exactly what they did with their next three albums,
“Rattle and Hum,” “Achtung, Baby,”
and “Zooropa.” “Zooropa” was followed
by an enormous yearlong world tour that like prior tours,
instantly concert tickets sold out within minutes across
the globe.
When they released the video of "One"
they did so with 3 different versions that were released
over a 6 month period. The 1st of the three videos was filmed
in Berlin, Germany by Anton Corbijn. The video features
Paul Hewson's (Bono) father, shows the band members dressed
in drag, and features little cars driving around Berlin.
The band realized that many people were misinterpreting
the video as sexualizing the AIDS crisis. U2 donated the
profits from the single to various Aids charities and quickly
made another video, commonly refereed to as "The Buffalo
Video". The 3rd vide shows flashes of the band performing,
interlaced with shots of Bono in a bar smoking
a cigarette and drinking a Heineken.
Among U2’s achievements is their undying
devotion to humanitarian work in several underdeveloped
countries. U2 has help support more than 15 non-profit organizations
throughout their 35 year career, including Amnesty International,
Greenpeace, African Well Fund and the Chernobyl Children’s
Project, just to name a few.
In 2005 U2 launched their Worldwide Vertigo
Tour and
U2 concert tickets for this tour sold out within minutes,
thus proving their staying power. A 35-year career, with
more number one hits than any other rock band, 15 albums
and multiple Grammy’s, it is no wonder that U2 is
one of the biggest rock bands of this century.
Please Note - The U2 Tour Dates and U2 Concert
Tour Schedules that we list on our site, are subject to
change. Although it is exceptionally rare that U2 postpones
a concert, they were forced to due for the last 10 shows
on their Vertigo Concert Tour, due to Dave Evans (The Edge)
daughters battle with leukemia.
